Several people have reached out and strongly suggested considering second opinion consults as we go through this journey. My amazing sister-in-law, Alyssa Rapp, immediately introduced me to her friend and company board member, Dr. Funmi Olopade who is one of the University of Chicago’s top hematology oncologists. Dr. Olopade and I have been texting since the day I learned of my moms illness. She will also be engaged in the genetic testing we will be doing on October 20.

University of Chicago is one of the top research hospitals and they just happen to have a local office with a gynecologic oncologist in Schererville, Indiana. As I was researching, I noticed the address of the building and quickly realized they are literally across the street from my business in Schererville and rent space from my landlord, Rick Newell! I immediately texted him and within minutes I had a call from Doty at this office. She worked magic to get us in the very next day after my mom was discharged from the hospital. It was truly a miracle!!! We met with the fantastic Dr. Katherine Kurnit at 8am on September 20. My mom absolutely loved her and so did I. She had an amazing way of explaining what was happening to my moms body and what she believed would be the best course of treatment. The “sandwich” treatment approach involves three rounds of chemotherapy followed by surgery and then another three rounds. This is also the same approach described by Dr. Sharma.

I am blessed at the network we have within reach and will continue to use every resource I have to find my mom the best care.
